Driver Prolific Serial
Answer
windows 8 does not support Prolific usb to serial driver
what is the solution.
We want to use windows 8 but due to this driver problem, we are not buying windows 8
Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use. If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8but in the meantime I am
telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS s functioning, to downgrade to Win7.
Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

I just bought a prolific usb to com adapter and plugged it in and it worked with Windows 8 pro 64bit. No driver install. Must have auto downloaded with Windows Update. So yes they do work under windows 8 prob just depends on which adapter you have. Mine
unfortunately doesnt have anything written on it.

As strange as it may look, you need an outdated driver to make it work. The only working version i ve found is 3.3.2.102, which you can find on the links bellow:
You need to force this driver version by going to device manager, choose update driver from right click into prolific adapter, the choose browse my computer for driver software, then let me pick. On the next window, it should show you different
versions of the driver, and you need to choose ver 3.3.2.102 ok.

Excellent. Thank you very much. Bought my GoldX GXMU-1200 specifically because tech support told me I needed that adapter to upload firmware on a specific model of HDMI switcher from my old Win7 machine. Since I have gotten my Win8 rig I needed to program
a universal remote at work today and was unable to make it work. You saved me 10 bucks at Radio Shack, I appreciate that.
Thank you, Eliyas. This was indeed interesting information. However, as I use serial ports once every four - five years nowadays, if I were to use supported chips, I would need to buy a new one every time I need it -So getting to know of this old driver
really helps.
windows 8 does not support Prolific usb to serial driver
I did as you suggest and when I picked the driver from the list there was only one driver shown, I got an error message Driver will not start error 10. I m thinking it s the Prolific ship itself, which was designed for 32-bit machines and isn t
compatible with 64-bit machines.
There is no problem about the Prolific chip in Windows 64-bit; it seems the problem is that the newer drivers do not support the older versions of the Prolific chip. Downloading and installing an old Vista driver like v. 3.2.0.0 and actively selecting
that driver as described by Sergio solves the problem, at least in my setup with an older version of the chip in a Geonaute GPS in a Windows 7 SP1 64 bit environment: works flawlessly.
Paul, thanks for the information.
So I downloaded driver 3.2.0.0 and installed it as per instructions above and on the web page where I found the driver. then tested the port using HyperTerminal which still exists but is no longer bundled with Windows. Voila. Everything worked, data came
streaming in. Bliss.
Then the data stopped. The sender a GPS unit was still sending out data, but my laptop wasn t getting it. So I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled. Worked again for a few minutes, then nothing. Did this a few times, using different USB ports, with
stopping times varying from a few seconds to over an hour. But in all cases the data stopped flowing at some point. Except on one case, where my Windows 8 crashed. Something about attempting to use memory that was restricted.
So I seem to be back to Square 1, unless somebody has another answer.
Worked for me too. Only problem was, the mirror sites Sergio lists don t have the driver anymore. Found it on a German-language site by googling.
I still get occasional crashes in the serial link; not sure what s causing it, but it s better than not having the connection. I just hope this never happens when I m negotiating a narrow channel I use the connection for GPS.
Thank you, Sergio..
download version 3.2.0.0, tested working
Many thanks to Sergio. I was ready to buy a new adaptor.
Anyway some computer companies should be more responsible to their customers.
E.g. this simple solution is not mentioned in prolific s web site. In the contrary, they claim that their old chipset in not compatible with Win 8.
FIXED:
My original problem was USB not recognized Com Port 3 with Error 10 and a yellow triangle.
So, I had the same problem- I m running Win 8.1 64 bit on an HP AMD Pavillion - With a Prolific simple Audio cable Serial port to USB converter.
DEVICE STATUS this device is working properly
This driver works for me - Prolific 3.4.25.218 from 10/7/2011.
I can t vouch for this site but I also found it reproduced here.
You could Google for Prolific 3.4.25.218
I m not altogether sure where I originally downloaded it from but it does work- flawlessly.
NOTES
i Goto devices and drivers, Pick the USB port with yellow triangle Right click - then properties.
Select Hardware properties GENERAL Driver Change settings Update driver -
let me pick the driver from a list
ii Choose the update driver and pick this one from the advanced driver properties window.
iii I did not need a re-boot, nor did I need to choose run as administrator
iv Dont forget to set the comx,rate,n,8,1 settings to suit your device.
I have to tell you Shenan Stanley, you have no idea what you are talking about. You have an answer for everything and everyone on here, but it is a waste of your breath. How you ever got a job with Microsoft is hard to understand. You cannot comprehend
what you read, and you only hear what you want to hear. I m perfectly sure that the folks who are here looking for answers find what I m saying to be of great interest. Some of your statements are outright lies. Who are you protecting by lying. There is
no one in the world more honest and trustworthy than I. My own software company has been affected by this game that Prolific and Microsoft are playing. I ve outlined the problem and the cure. You have neither the intelligence or the education to even be
replying to this post. Do you push a broom. You certainly don t understand how Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 work. I ve been a programmer since before there were programming languages. Before Bill Gates himself. You are an imbecile.
You questioned my integrity and that s why you received such a rude response. I apologize. I am certain that others reading this understand perfectly. Why you don t, or why you are pretending not to, is the question. I ve provided the facts and I have
the proof. If you are smart and have any capability to do so, then go ahead and prove me wrong. Don t just deny it. Are you a developer who writes device drivers. Do you design, manufacture, and market such hardware and software. Let me call your bluff. You
do the research and then report back here with the proof that I am wrong. Since I ve done the research, I know you d be wasting your time. But, if you re up to the challenge, go for it. Unfortunately, when I m dealing with ignorance I lose my cool. Immature.
Maybe. It s very frustrating when someone who is ignorant makes statements as if they were factual, especially in the face of the truth. I posted the facts on here to help the people who are going through this ordeal to understand why this is so, who is responsible,
and what they can do about it. This problem is rampant. It s affecting millions of users and you cut and paste some from the Prolific website and want everyone to accept that as truth. Is that research. Is that the solution. It doesn t work because it s
EOL or it doesn t work because the only driver supplied by Prolific makes it so. And, it s illegal for anyone to supply any other driver. And, yes Microsoft is pushing that very driver to every Windows 8 and 8.1 equipped computer without the knowledge or
permission of the user, by default. Back in the 60 s, Vance Packard wrote a book called Planned Obsolescence. I happen to believe that this is so much worse than planned obsolescence, it might even be considered criminal in nature.
I finally found the solution because i could not change to windows 7, got to advanced settings from PC properties and disable automatic driver installation. Then uninstall the existing driver then get an older driver from this link
and install it using the device manager. you re done.
I know this is a little bit latebut it still an answer.
Well, I ve been reading and saw that the Prolific USB to Serial adapters which uses a PL2303HX revision A PL2303HXA are not been made anymore It reached EOL. There will be no new drivers for it, no drivers for Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.
If you want it to work, you have to buy a PL2303HXD Revision D or keep your Windows 7 running
Not pleased with the answer I kept digging around the internet until I find this, some guys fixed the driver, and it is working on newer operating systems. Maybe it was a way that Prolific tried to make everyone buy the newer HW I think.
The link for the tutorial with the driver is this
I hope it help someone that was lost like I was
Best Regards, Daniel

I found it with a web search. If I remember right, it was on the Prolific web site. Of course, it was not for Win7, but if memory serves, I set it for XP or Vista and it installed OK.
Bye.

When you try to install it manually and tell windows to search online for driver, it doesn t find it. For me it installed that way. Anyway, I zipped the driver, you didn t say for what you are using it, so I don t know if it will work for you, but, you can try to install manually it from this folder, just unzip

got it to work in windows 7
This is how I got to connect my older Nokia 6103 to sync with Outlook in win7. Surprisingly it was not the latest build of the driver found on the prolific website that was compatible with win7 that worked for me. I went here instead: Windows Vista driver for prolific chip USB Serial Adapters
and got the vista version. Even though it did not ask for a reboot, I did so because of the nature of serial ports and it installed successfully. It still did not recognize the phone until I change the com port from no. 1 to 3 that it did work. Cheers.
